Polar Panoramics
These are by way of experiments in preparation for the 19th April 2011 Techniques Tuesday meeting at Derby City Photographic Club. A member has indicated that these would be of interest.

They are prepared from a series of hand held photographs taken by rotating one's body through 360°. The total number of photographs taken will depend on the focal length of the lens used and whether the photographs are taken in portrait or landscape mode.

When I attempted to install Adobe Photoshop CS5 on Thursday 22nd December 2010, the installer got to 11% and stuck. I downloaded the trial as suggested by Adobe, same result. Eventually a second support technician who I spoke to the next day was able to put her finger on the problem and resolved it.

I have been trying to create Photomerged images without success since then, so on 4th February I bit the bullet again and called Adobe technical support. Eventually there was that eureka moment when I was able to successfully create Photomerged panoramic images again. The technician was audibly very happy with a successful result, all down to a malfunctioning preferences file.

The original photographs in the two creations below were taken with the Nikkor 10.5mm lens, in the first image I used 14 Photomerged photographs and in the second 23.

Exterior view of part of Bolsover Castle, website here, an interesting visit on Wednesday 11th August 2010. This is a six shot panorama, with this type of image there is bound to be some distortion.

Wonderful ceiling in one of the rooms in the tower at Bolsover Castle slight distortion at the right hand side as this has been de-fished from a shot taken with my 10.5mm fish-eye lens. Neither Photoshop CS5 or DxO Pro made a perfect conversion. Perhaps need to try Fisheye Hemi.

I was photographing these rather rude statues at Bolsover castle yesterday when I heard from my side "How rude Thompson" this from my 6 year old female companion.

"Out of the mouths of babes (oft times come gems)."

The Venus fountain is reputed to be the "rudest fountain" in the country.

On my way home yesterday from Derby and saw these amazing layered clouds. Looking north east from the bridge over the A50 in Aston on Trent towards Shardlow and beyond.

It is a seven shot panorama, the cam in portrait orientation, Photomerged in Adobe Photoshop CS4.


This photograph was taken just after the ones above, I like the way the tree is illuminated, the sun is getting low down even at 13:20hrs and casting a long shadow. The tree has no life of its own, however it is giving support to the ivy growing around the trunk. Interesting clouds again shown in this capture.
